Artist Statement Pottery originated as a functional art, and remains a remnant from a time when art was more seamlessly incorporated into daily life or ritual practice. This union of artwork with useful object is a source of inspiration for me, and I am most satisfied with a piece when it attests to this dual nature. I like the idea that, as a work of art, it could potentially be around for a thousand years, a monument to the mark of my fingers. This thought holds me accountable. But another important motivation for making smooth rims, satisfying contours and clean, high feet is the fact that my eyes and hands pass over these objects every day. Because they are part of my daily life, they must satisfy my sense of touch as well as sight in order to be truly beautiful.
